Halloween Night

Halloween Photo Album at bottom left.

What I want to remember about this year’s Halloween:

  • Sean’s awe at the magic of saying “Trick or Treat” and getting candy in response (though he sometimes confused the order of things and said “Thank you” first).

  • Aidan being as--or more-- excited about giving out candy to Trick-or-Treaters as he was about collecting candy. He was ready to jump out of bed every time the doorbell rang.

  • Our kind neighbors. Several were away this year, which made me all the more appreciative of those who do bother to light up their steps, welcome strangers at their door, and delight children with a little treat. Neighbors across the street were going away for the week, and before they left, they came by with goodie bags for each boy (including glow-in-the-dark skeletons which they LOVED). At least two houses left candy bowls outside their doors since they wouldn’t be at home.  I love those efforts of kindness.

  • Brian helping every step of the way. My mom often quotes her cousin Betty, who said, in reference to her husband, “He always made it so easy.” I don't always find it easy, but Brian definitely makes it easier. I want to remember Brian helping me frost cupcakes late on Tuesday night, pretending my pumpkin cupcakes actually resembled pumpkins, and cleaning up my baking mess before I could even notice.

  • The sweet innocence of Aidan and his classmates. I can only hope he’ll be as lucky every year to have peers who are so kind to each other. While the room mothers were setting up the party, I read books we had gotten from the public library: Go Away Big Green Monster and I’m Not Afraid of This Haunted House. They totally got into it and read the repeating lines with me. Aidan even danced---our Aidan---to the Monster Freeze dance (Sean of course was dancing, but that’s to be expected).

  • And a note for next year: after a classroom party, a costume parade, and an evening of trick or treating ahead, it might be better to skip the school carnival.
