One more week until Oscar Night!
In the home where I grew up, Oscars night was the equivalent of Super Bowl Sunday in other homes. For years, even after all but the youngest had left home, my brother Kevin would still send out ballots and tally the winner among us.
So, regardless of how few movies you've seen (we never let that stop us!), I want to know your vote.
Please leave a comment listing your picks, numbered 1-8. Comments will close at midnight on Saturday, February 23rd. Whoever has the most correct picks will receive a $25 Amazon gift card to purchase the DVD of their choice or just a lot of popcorn!
I’ll include my picks in the comments. I’ve seen six out of the nine nominated for Best Picture. Thanks to our little Moab theater eventually getting the big releases, most of them have been in the last four weeks. Locals, “Beasts of the Southern Wild” will be shown at Star Hall this Thursday @ 7PM.
And the nominees are…
1. Best Picture: Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Zero Dark Thirty
2. Best Director: Michele Haneke for Amour; Benh Zeitlin for Beast of the Southern Wild; Ang Lee for Life of Pi; Steven Spielberg for Lincoln; David O. Russel for Silver Linings Playbook
3. Best Actress: Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty; Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook; Emmanuelle Riva for Amour; Quvenzhane Wallis for Beasts of the Southern Wild; Naomi Watts for The Impossible
4. Best Actor: Bradley Cooper, Silver Linings Playbook; Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln; Hugh Jackman for Les Miserables; Joaquin Phoenix for The Master; Denzel Washington, Flight
5. Supporting Actor: Alan Arkin, Argo; Robert De Niro, Silver Linings Playbook; Phillip Seymour Hoffman, The Master; Tommy Lee Jones, Lincoln; Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained
6. Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, The Master; Sally Field, Lincoln; Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables; Helen Hunt, The Sessions, Jacki Weaver, Silver Linings Playbook
7. Original Screenplay: Amour, Django Unchained, Flight, Moonrise Kingdom, Zero Dark Thirty [This is one of the most interesting categories this year, because I can think of reasons why each might not win.]
8. Adapted Screenplay; Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook
If “Wreck-It Ralph” beats “Brave,” known around here as Mary Alice’s movie, for Best Animated Feature, there will be riots in our household. You’ve been warned, Academy!
For those who want to play along at home O’Malley style, Jessica Jones has created a sweet Oscar ballot you can download from her site, How About Orange.
Also, for my fellow O’Malley’s and movie-buffs, check out the Oscar Poster by Olly Moss that celebrates each Best Picture winner with a unique Oscar statuette. If I were hosting my sisters & brothers, rather than 3 boys under age 11 on Oscar night, we’d also be playing a game of scrambling the order of those statuettes and seeing who could guess which movie is represented by each.
Oscar Prediction Contest (part of our month-long giveaway celebration):
Leave a comment listing your picks for the winner in the 8 categories above, numbered 1-8.
Comments will close at midnight on Saturday, February 23rd.
One winner will receive a $25 Amazon gift card to purchase the DVD of their choice or just a lot of popcorn! If more than one person gets the highest number of predictions correct, we’ll have Nolan pick one winner from a hat.
I’ll announce our winner on Monday, after they announce their winners on Sunday!
Updated ---Winner Announced!
Congratulations to Leila!
No one got a perfect score of 8 predictions correct, but out of our 28 entries, 3 tied with a score of 7. Our random winner out of those three is Leila! Enjoy, Leila, and thank you to everyone who entered!
1. Lincoln
ReplyDelete2. Steven Spielberg
3. Jennifer Lawrence
4. Daniel Day-Lewis
5. Alan Arkin (probably wrong...)
6. Anne Hathaway
7. Amour
8. Lincoln
Those are my predictions, however if I got to choose, Ang Lee would win for directing Life of Pi, and De Niro for his best acting in ages in Silver Linings Playbook, and Anne Hathaway would lose in a surprise upset by Amy Adams.
Fun, Deirdre! :) Please keep in mind I am just now catching up on some Oscar nominated movies from LAST year's Oscars. Ha! (For this year's, I have only seen Life of Pi) But, here are my picks...
ReplyDelete1. Lincoln
2. Steven Spielberg
3. Jennifer Lawrence
4. Daniel Day-Lewis
5. Robert DeNiro
6. Anne Hathaway
7. Zero Dark Thirty
8. Lincoln
(Okay.. I am seeing now that most of mine are the same as yours... probably a good sign?)
-Joanie :)
Thanks for playing, Joanie! Probably a bad sign as I notoriously find myself still picking who I think should win rather than the best bet (which, based on award-season, looks to be "Agro"). Arkin, even though he has the best line in the movie, has such a small, comic-relief role and already won for Little Miss Sunshine not long ago, probably won't win. I'm gonna want to change my predictions all week:)
DeleteHave seen almost all the relevant movies (except Flight, The Impossible, and Moonrise Kingdom)
ReplyDelete1. Will Win: Argo Should Win: Amour
2. WW: Spielberg SW: Spielberg
3. WW: Lawrence SW: Riva
4. WW: Day-Lewis SW: Day-Lewis
5. WW: Waltz SW: Hoffman
6. WW: Hathaway SW: Hathaway (weakest category by far!)
7. WW: Zero Dark Thirty SW: Amour
8: WW: Lincoln SW: Life of Pi

♥Just happy that you're playing♥ And finding it a little funny that you've had more access to movies (Amour and The Master) in Saudi Arabia than I do in Moab--or did your last swing through the states include a lot of movies?
DeleteBoth supporting categories are weak,по-моему. I disliked Django Unchained, but Waltz was excellent, surprising me because I thought his win for BSA in Inglorious Bastards was yet another case of the Best Supporting award really being an award for Best Casting.
While Wes certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea, I imagine you'd fully enjoy Moonrise Kingdom. Let me know when you see it:)

BOOOM!
And I showed up as Unknown... deleted my comment and then figured out how to be official and posted. :)
ReplyDeleteYou know I would've called you out anyway:) I'll be happy if you're right about #2 and #5. I'm shocked to see you give Moonrise Kingdom the award, though I'd be thrilled if it wins. I liked the movie "Life of Pi" more than the book (almost unheard of, but the novel's end just crushed me and I couldn't recover), so that would be a sweet surprise too.
DeleteI was going to say that I can't remember one line from Argo beside "bang, you're dead" but as soon as I wrote that, good lines came to mind [if we wanted applause, we would have joined the circus; the one about sending them training wheels and gatorade...and what does Arkin's character say about fatherhood?]. I'm rambling in my own comments!

Bonus Best Doc: Searching For Sugar Man ; )
1. Best Picture: Argo
ReplyDelete2. Best Director: Steven Spielberg for Lincoln. (And yes, Ben Affleck was robbed! This should've been his Oscar. Maybe Mr. Spielberg or whomever else wins will address such an injustice and make it right.)
3. Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook.
4. Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln. I think the man is trying to top or break Kate Hepburn's all time record of 4 Oscar wins. He keeps picking the choice roles, he might just do it.
5. Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones for Lincoln. This one will separate the film buffs from those just following the herd.
6. Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables. And about bloody time too! She was WAY overdue for a statue.
7. Original Screenplay: Django Unchained. Course, I wouldn't be surprised if it lost. To be honest, I'm surprised this film got as many nominations as it did. Not Taratino's finest work, which would be Pulp Fiction.
8. Adapted Screenplay: Argo. This'll make up for Affleck getting stiffed as Best Director.
